TITLE:  Communications Manager

TEAM/PROGRAMME: Program Development, Quality and Communications

LOCATION: Beijing

CHILD SAFEGUARDING:

Level 3:  the post holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

ROLE PURPOSE:

Save the Children is looking for an outstanding, energetic and proactive individual with a passion for strengthening communications and knowledgement management in organization, with experience of managing social media platforms and website, design and develop powerful case stories, videos at project, program and organizational level, develop monthly newsletter and annual review, manage external communications partnership to maximize impact, etc.

 

The role holder is responsible for leading the external communications and supporting internal communications and knowledge management for Save the Children China Country Office (CO). As a key member of the Program Development, Quality, Advocacy and Communications function. In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Director of Program Development, Quality and Communications

Staff reporting to this post: 1communications officer

Budget Responsibilities: Yes

Role Dimensions: Interpersonal contact regular and varied, involved negotiation, influencing skills, and representation at national level and donor / press visits, executive support

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY :

Lead communications planning and implementation

·         Lead the planning and delivery of an effective external communications plan.

·         Oversee the planning and regular updating of CO’s website, social media platforms such as Wechat, Weibo, Douyin, etc.

·         Oversee the production of high quality CO’s communication tools, including but not limited to monthly newsletters, annual reviews, videos, impact stories to share with different audience etc, as well as the development of CO’s visual branding products such as notebooks, T-shirts, letterhead, PPT format.

·         Provide guidance to the development and execution on program communicaitons plan, and  program comms contribute to the CO’s overall comms objectives and comply with CO’s branding.

·         Support senior management team members to prepare communication materials and info for external events.

·         Establish and maintain external partnerships and suppliers for the purpose of developing good quality communications tools and maximize impact and influence of CO’s work.

·         Ensure that communications plan is adequately resourced and manage the budget well.

·         Act as the main point of contact for media inquiries, Asia Regional Office’s communications and campaign team, and other relevant request.

·         Build the overall communication capacity of the CO’s team, including through providing training and ongoing support.

·         Support the CO’s internal communications.

 

Support knowledge management to enhance CO’s thought leadership

·         Support the development and execution of CO knowledge management plan

·         Develop and execute a communication plan to disseminate the knowledge generated from CO program in the country and maximize its impact to enhance CO’s thought leadership in child protection and development

·         Engage with the global Save the Children network to share knowledge and good practices from China


Safeguard branding

·         Ensure CO closely follow and comply with Save the Children’s global branding and communication policy and tools.

·         Develop CO’s guidance on branding and ensure coherent understanding. 

·         Ensure a coherent presentation of CO’s branding in the market.

·         Build capacity of the CO’s team on following the branding guidance.

·         Build and lead a high-performance team to deliver objectives, foster cohesion and integration in the team. Manage staff as well as interns and volunteers – providing support, motivation, and opportunities for staff development.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

·         At least 5 years’ experience with relevant experience relevant to this position;

·         Master degree or above, major in Communications, Journalism, media production, marketing/public relations is preferable;

·         Good understanding of the media and social media landscape in China;

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Mandarin and English;

·         Strong leadership, people and interpersonal management, collaboration, and relationship building skills;

·         A commitment to support cross-organizational initiatives and understanding of how to contribute to this;

·         An ability to think strategically and to translate ideas into delivery of results;

·         An understanding of and commitment to, the aims of Save the Children as an organization working for social change and active in the promotion of the rights of the child;

·         Ability to operate within a predominantly administratively self-servicing environment.

 

Desirable

·         Experience with social media and digital communications;

·         Photography and video editing skills;

·         Experience of working in development or humanitarian assistance;

·         Experience in delivering training, coaching or mentoring others;

·         Strong networking skills with in-country media or social media platforms related to development.
